Fieldwork Group 4

They introduced themselves, and transitioned into each slide. They explained the rules of the classroom and they did a teacher vs student game. The teacher asked the student about what they knew about technology. They did a good job of transitioning. I loved the teacher vs student game and so did the kids! I’m glad they picked one.

The teachers then started talking about different types of technology that is involved with the solar system. For the note sheets students had to write or underline things on powerpoints with slides on them. The teachers then took turns explaining the different types of technology. They did a stop and ponder. The teachers also showed a video about the first moon landing which the students found very exciting. The children were very intrigued by the technology the teachers were teaching about. This is important because it makes sure the students are paying attention. This was good because it gave students time to think about what they learned. The students loved the video.

The students participated in a game of jeopardy. They used a fruit to have the students answer the questions about what they’ve learned. They had so much fun during this game even though it got a little loud it still looked so fun! The fruit thing was very creative and nice to see. The students had to write on sticky notes what they were confused about what they learned and what they still don’t know. I liked the rocketship you guys made for closure it was very creative.

The students had to write a letter to the about one of their favorite pieces of technology to the social media manager at NASA. I liked the connection you guys made back to the social media manager. It was a little loud for independent practice.

  1. I loved that you guys played jeopardy that was so fun
  2. I loved the student teacher/game
  3. I liked you closure
I wish you used the game a little more when the class got loud.

Science and technology KDP event

Throughout this presentation there were many new things to learn.
classtool.net has amazing tools for in classroom activities.

Padlet great tool for sharing ideas between the students. They can add whatever they want in reference to their lesson.
Ex:
Social bookmarking
del.icio.us
Diigo chrome extension
Scoopit
Begtheweb collect in bag your resources for a lesson.

Google form I was able to present to the class all i know about google drive it was so fun. Going through all the google forms that i'm so used to everyday was so exciting. It was nice to share the information with everyone who came to the program.

Kristen then did a kahoot with the whole class that she used earlier in field work. Kahoot's are so interactive and they save the information to make a chart for the teacher.

More examples of programs to use: prezi, voki, voicethread, thinglink, powtoon.

Voicethread: very good tool, and can even connect to other teachers throughout the world. I would never think to do that and it was very creative.

There are so many tools that you can use it seems almost impossible to know them all. Now, I'm excited to teach with technology. Knowing all these new techniques is so beneficial, and I'm so happy I'm learning all this new information.

Live binders: topics, lessons, unit plans, and you can adjust them to your own needs.

SMART board: smart exchange and smart express, vortex- i was able to talk about using vortex in field work earlier that day.
Magic pen was a great spotlight tool! If you do a circle it does a spotlight and you do a square it magnifies. Also if you want to write something the ink will disappear in a few seconds.

Fieldwork Group 2

First went over classroom rules.Used a traffic light to establish when things were getting to out of control. They used a WordArt to show what vocab they’re going to be going over. They showed a live feed of the Earth from space. They had the kids write on board what they think makes up the universe. ”Mac & Cheese eye on me” was very creative. The kids were so excited to see the Earth from space it was so exciting. When having technical difficulties the group did a great job of staying on task.

They handed out a guided practice worksheet to help them through the lesson. They went over galaxies, and what different types of shapes they can be.They then did a turn and talk about what makes up the universe. Then a turn and talk about the shapes of the galaxy. Then they started to go over planets, dwarf planets, moons, and asteroid belts.Had the students come up and draw something they could find in the Solar system. They then used a youtube video to define gravity. The teachers kept engaging the student throughout the lesson by asking questions. Then they started going over the inner planets, and they came up with a trick to help the children try and remember them. They showed the class a rap about the solar system. They went over each of the inner planets individually and talked about facts. They changed it up by throwing in a true or false question. Then they went over the planets and brainstormed about the planets characteristics. Kids were very excited to see Bill Nye the Science Guy. The teachers had a good idea of what was on the slides and when there were problems with the slides they were still able to teach. The kids loved going up to the smart board to participate. I liked that they’re using different forms technology to teach the student this lesson. I loved how their powerpoint wasn’t crowded with information and each slide had a different background to keep the kids interested. You could really tell the class was engaged because they were so quiet during the video. The true or false was a nice change of pace.Did a great job of including the entire class in the lesson.

They then got to play a Kahoot. It was very engaging, all the students were invested in the game. The kahoot did a good job of going over all the areas of lesson, and reviewing what the students learned today. The kids were so excited to play the kahoot and it kept them very engaged. The teachers did a good job of making sure all the students got a day in the game. They asked the kids to put sticky notes on the board of what they understand, kind of understand and don’t understand at all. I was creative idea, and the students enjoyed walking up to the board. It really activated some of their questions they had throughout the lesson.

For their independent practice they got a universe and everything in it crossword puzzle. If the task is completed correctly I think this practice is a good way to see if the students truly learned the material. The class seemed to have some trouble with this independent practice. When it got a little loud the teachers did a good job of making sure the students settled down before beginning their work. There were a few students still talking so I wish they had used the traffic lights to enforce to the students that this was independent practice. The teachers did a great job of walking around and helping the students without just giving them the answers. Using the note sheet for independent practice was a little counterproductive because they were supposed to being doing it on their own. I think a word box on the independent practice in the first place may have helped more.

  1. Loved “mac and cheese eyes on me” and so did the students!
  2. Did a good job of calming down the students when it got too loud.
  3. The kids loved the kahoot that was awesome!
I wish the students didn’t have their note sheet during direct instruction.

Fieldwork Group 1

The teacher engaged the class by asking what the students know about the Earth and the Moon. Gave them questions and asked if they knew the answers. Used “Thumbs up if you agree” to see if they agreed. Didn’t see a clear transition. Text on the powerpoint was very small, and difficult to read especially from the back. She’s doing a great job. I enjoyed the “Thumbs up if you agree”

Had quick review of the powerpoint slides. Then began to ask them more questions to see what the students know. Then began about the Earth’s revolution. They’re using a powerpoint to conduct their lesson. They listed off a lot of information to the students. Modeled by using hand movements to show rotation and revolution. They then started talking about the eclipses and used the same approach as before.Had the students do a turn and talk about the stars. Then asked the students to talk about what they discussed. A lot of open discussion about the topics, and had the students thinking about the solar system. They began a discussion about constellations. Then asked review questions. Sounded like reading off slides for some of the lesson.  Before the discussion of the stars I think it would’ve been helpful if the teacher said, “When I say go,” before the students started speaking. She got cut off and didn’t get to fully explain what they were supposed to talk about.

I loved when they had to imagine they were on the beach, and compared the stars to the sand. The kids were so excited to try and guess the constellations.Loved to see the kids do a “turn and talk” they really enjoyed that part.

They had sentence strips with blank spaces and the students had to figure out what word fits in the blank. They get sticky notes so they could write out their word strips. The teachers went around to assist the groups. Then they transitioned into the independent practice.

They asked what the students learned today. When students said they learned something they didn’t know before, they could’ve gone a step further and asked them to be specific about what they learned. They handed out a worksheet, and had the students work independently on it. The teachers walked around the classroom at this time while the students work and observed them. They then collected the worksheet and began the closure. Good way to see what they learned throughout the lesson!

  1. Very nice and loud teacher voices!
  2. They engaged the students throughout the lesson by asking many questions.
  3. The part where the students had to imagine themselves on the beach was really cool and interactive!
I really wish the slides had bigger fonts, and less text on each slide.

Hurricanes

Hurricanes have become more and more vicious over the past few years. This hurricane season was especially rough on Texas and the US Virgin Islands. Hurricanes are strong tropical storms that have strong winds and heavy rain fall. This year hurricanes have devastated parts of the world in ways that they will not be able to recover for many years.

Puerto Rico was hit the hardest after Hurricane Maria.

Scientists are still trying to figure out why these storms are getting more and more violent throughout the past few years. The biggest theory is climate change is making the water warmer therefore making the storms more intense.
